NOT A MECHANIC!! I am an Aerospace Engineer/Mechanical Engineer for over 19 years. The purpose of this channel is to teach others (i.e. DIY's and Mechanics) how to source mid-high-grade tools for bargain prices. I will also review the big name brands such as Snap-On., Mac, SK, Matco etc., from a non-biased perspective. I strongly believe in providing the viewers with an honest review, and I welcome your comments, opinions, suggestions, etc. Lastly, I have a passion for tool restorations, and I believe old/vintage tools have a history and story. There's nothing like restoring a tool that was designed and manufactured here in the U.S.A with craftsmanship.
Selecting Wrenches For The Average DIY’r @JimmyMakingitwork

Why do you need 10 of the same ratchet
Wright makes excellent heavy industrial grade stuff. Used to work in maintenance in a foundry that made Toyota engine blocks and transmissions castings etc. We had these gigantic Toshiba high pressure die casting machines that had 100mm nuts. Used to use the shop's 42" long Wright ratchet with 1" drive and use the overhead gantry crane to pull up on the handle with a heavy strap to bust those big ass nuts loose. The handle would bend and bend then CRACK!!! the nut would break loose. Never did phase that ratchet. I always marveled at that damn ratchet. Could have used a breaker bar, but where's the fun in that?
unnecessary smh
You'll never use 90% of them, I can remember the last time I touched my 1/2inch ratchet was. 3/8 and 1/4 flex heads all the time.
At 1:45 you side I would rather spend money on ratchet than on drugs iv always said everyone has a addiction
It’s a shame they only make 3/8 sockets up to 19mm and they don’t have a long format combo wrench. I’d buy their tools but they just seem to always have gaps that I’m annoyed with.
I have liked Capri tools from my first experience with one of their products, perhaps 4-ish years ago. What I appreciate about the Capri tools I have is Finish. Their tools are highly polished, style and presentation obviously matter to this company. As far as pricing, yes, there is a premium, somewhat elevated price when compared with cheap crap like Harbor Freight. I have used plenty of cheap tools and there is a place and time for them. . When I want something nice, Capri stuff is right in the sweet spot. FYI the Little Torque Wrench that could also comes in a Nm version, of basically the same wrench (scale is roughly the same, but tweaked to provide 3-16 Nm (converts to 26.55 lbs./in to 141.61 lbs./in) instead of the 30-140 on the version shown here. I will mostly use it for bike stuff, but also occasional small automotive applications like cam covers and lower torque stuff and tight access situations.
Ngl, for DIYers the best option is icon. I can afford a fully stocked chest of snap-on tools and I do use alot of their pliers because i like them. But with no tool truck sitting outside for warranty issues, its good to walk into the local china freight and get a new tool within seconds. Snap-on is better. Period. But i dont have access to a truck so i need better warranty options than mail it back
“All of the unique stuff that you would need” as he shows a drawer of 20 identical ratchets. Just say you have an addiction it’s ok we’ll all with you on the ride
Oh I have an addiction, but recently, I sold 70+ ratchets, so I’m also in recovery mode
Half inch is regular size
There will ALWAYS be people on the internet who just hate to hate. No reason to do it they just do it to try to make people feel bad. I can care less what people think in real life or the internet. What ever tools you have are the BEST tools for you. ICON is fine, Husky is fine, Gear Wrench, TEKTON, CAPRI, what-ever. Just because it is not off a tool truck does not mean it's crap. Screw anyone who as crap to say about your tools or your setup.
All perfectly organized in my husky tool box
What is going on !!! Been a month no videos !!!
I have several entire sets of vintage Snap-On and Mac sockets that I've restored. And I really like the older sockets with flat, heavy bases and no chamfer - I have a set like that of 3/8" Britool (formerly a top UK brand, now sadly declined), and they fit really firmly onto a ratchet, no sideways play at all.
I recently got their 6 in one (torx) for the same reasons! I believe the pliers are rebranded Wilde USA. Excellent pliers!
With a Husky tool box??
Yep!
James, are the new Icon mid lengths any good? What's your opinion on Icon sockets?
Not sure, but I have a set of the 3/8” deep chrome, and while they are a little soft, for the money, I can’t complain. That said, I’d assume the mid-length are equivalent in performance as the deeps. In general, I wouldn’t discourage anyone from purchasing a set or two…
Bullshit process!
Show us the shop bunny!
Unfortunately he passed away this year
13k in unused ratchets in a $300 husky box lol in a home garage. You’re the man
It's almost like listening to Bubba Gump talking about shrimp. You can put tools in that space. Got it.
That’s racist and if you lived in Indiana, I’d whoop your ass for making the comment! You got that too!
@@MidwestToolReview Speech isn't racism. But I see why you might think it is.
Bubba Gump reference to a Black man…let me think about that… if you wanted to talk crap about the video, that’s fine by me; I won’t silence free speech. However, if you’re going to insult my skin color…we have a problem. If that wasn’t your intention, then I apologize…if that was your purpose, well…you already know my position…
@@MidwestToolReview He was black? Never noticed. I was referencing how he mentions every single shrimp option. Like talking about every single screw driver in a box. Was pretty sure it was a joke you tried there but maybe not. Edit: I was joking of course about not knowing he was black... Bubba is the best character in that movie. Tom and Lt. Dan was alright. Can't remember any others.
@@MidwestToolReview Btw don't apologize. If anything I should. I wasn't trying to be racist, just an odd sense of humor. I have a very old school personality. Like an 80 year old Bill Burr that doesn't understand how others see the world sometimes.
i dont now why you american need so much ratches, oke maybe 2 or 3 max its oke maybe 1 or 2 of 1/4“ and 1 or 2 of 1/2“ and 1 or 2 of 3/8“ but why you need so much ratches, brother most of them are all same, in Germany whe need only max 4-6. greetings from Germany
That’s how much I habe into my Lego Star Wars collection :)
Can’t beat the toggle trigger on the snap on one tho
Sleeeper tool box. lol
Love the patina on it looks killer!
Nice Set Up Bro 👊 I'm a DIY'er. Here's My 69" Roll Cab Set Up. All Harbor Freight. ua-cam.com/video/pvaiI-APQpA/v-deo.htmlsi=Z_mH7vSuu5qebSOd
Where did you get those YELLOW socket holders? I have been looking for either Yellow or Green but all I find is black, The yellow looks good with chrome and impact but I am having no luck.
Tbh, I believe I found them on Amazon.
Damn! OLSA Tools and Capri Tools as channel sponsors? That is great, I love Capri and OLZA tools but a lot of the stuff is just out of my price right now. I reached out to one of them asking for an idea of a good starter kit for someone just starting out and they just emailed back with a link to the website with the sales going on. LOL
I can help you put together a nice kit. What profession are you working within?
Was that the tool widget holding your ratchets or something else? I have been looking for a better way then just laying my ratchets in my draw and that looked very nice.
I’m all about saving money when buying tools but I’ll never understand someone (especially someone who isn’t a professional tech) who owns 35 ratchets. I’m a professional technician and I own a 1/4” flex head, 3/8” flex head and a 1/2” breaker bar. These 3 tools do everything I could ever need.
I’ve had good luck with Taiwan made tools. I know what you mean about using a cheap tool for a one time job. I needed a 9/16th flare nut crows foot for a specific job so I bought a complete set of standard and metric in the PT brand from Pep Boys. I’ve used these sets ONE time in over 20 years. They got the job done.
but why dose he have the same ratchet like 10 times :D
Wait till your wife sells it all for $600 on offer up when you pass.
Please do a video on how to buy CAT snap on
Nup, they 'look' good and are fairly decent quality wise but the sharp square sides of the beams rules them out for daily use. Especially being a long pattern DBE.
I think if these were combination wrenches with sharp corners/edges, I’d agree regarding your comments on daily use. However, I don’t see this type of wrench being used repeatedly, or at the same level as a standard combo wrench.
👍🏻
Wow that’s a nice tool box. You have the right tool for literally everything. Just found your channel and subbed.
Thank you!! Glad you like and appreciate the setup. I tried to have everything a guy could need to fix just about anything in his shop
I’m jealous. I have a drinking problem and wish I could stop and just put the money into tools
Try to get some F'erd leverage. Lol BTW I would like to see you get a VW bug carburetor off without the half moon wrench. That rear fan shroud facing nut is impossible.
I’ve done it without the half moon in the past. If you look back at some of my earlier videos, I had a ‘68 VW Super Beetle and had to refurbish the carb. Had to remove it on several occasions…wasn’t easy, but we got it done…
Where’s the electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tools?
I have an entire setup. Should I do a vid?
So they make a universal damaged/broken spark plug removal kit? I tried looking on Amazon but all I found was one for a Ford. Do you know of any places I may be able to look? Oh and by the way, great freaking tool box man, EPIC!
Thanks for making these great videos. I love hearing your advice it really makes me think about what tools I really need to get and what I can live without.
Glad to hear that! I’ve been buying and selling tools for years, and as such, I’ve learned what to look for in terms of brands, quality and reliability.
Thanks for making these great videos. I love hearing your advice it really makes me think about what tools I really need to get and what I can live without.
Experience and passion for having the right tool for the job is refreshing. Kindred toolers man - right on.
Yessir! Nothing like having the right tools to get the job done. For Diy’rs, it’s even more important if you’re performing a job whereby you’ve got limited experience. Having the right tools provide a level of confidence as well as reducing unnecessary risk of damaging the parts and/or breaking a tool.
Buy what you need
Agreed!
Exactly why I don’t like soft handles.
I’m not a fan of Matco
Great video James, well done. Glad to hear a DIY perspective on the wrenches needed to get things done! :)
Thank you! I apologize for jumping in on your subject matter, so I made it clear to my audience, that video was inspired by yours and I was merely following your lead. I’d love to collaborate with you, so if there’s any topics you feel I might be able to add insight to, just let me know ow
Couldn't agree more. I love my USA-made Craftsman Professional series combo wrenches, Craftsman stubbies and Capri Tools long box-ends. They all get the job done for far less than the tool-truck brands.
Well done.
The old craftsman raised panel are made by Western forge the super chrome professional series were made by SK
